Now available, Dan Appleman's latest ebook: Dan Appleman's Exploring VB6 Volume 2: Files and Directories

This second volume in a best-of collection series covers a variety of topics, mostly at an intermediate to advanced level. Originally published in Pinnacle's Visual Basic newsletter or Fawcette's Visual Basic Programmer's Journal (now Visual Studio Magazine) for the VB6 audience, the articles have been updated and in some cases expanded for this collection. Where appropriate, a VB .NET supplement has been added to show how the problem would be addressed in VB .NET and/or C#.

  • Free at Last - Finding the free space on a disk sounds simple, but in the era of 200GB drives there is more to it than you might think.
  • Cafi de Visual Basic - Answers to reader's questions on a variety of topics including short file names, serial I/O and large bitmaps.
  • An Editorial Challenge - Learn to use COM image objects to find images associated with files. Then Unlearn the same material as you learn to port the code to VB .NET.
  • The Secret File - The SHFileOperation API function lets you perform a variety of file operations, if you can figure out how to use it.

Dan Appleman's Exploring VB6 Volume 2: Files and Directories available now for $7.95.

Review: Desaware Licensing System for .NET

Read Don Kiely's review of the Desaware Licensing System for .NET, recently published in Visual Studio Magazine (FTP Online). Click here to read it.

The Desaware Licensing System is also featured in an informative/in-depth article on software piracy and licensing in the Software Development Times, 1/15/2004. Click here to read it.

The Desaware Licensing System is an easy to use and secure way to license virtually any type of .NET application or component. The activation server can run on any IIS site that supports ASP.Net, including hosted sites. For more information on features, reviews and to download demo software, please click here .

Tech Tip: Monitor File System Changes with VB6

One question we've often been asked is how to monitor a system for changes to files. This feature can be used to detect situations where viruses modify your system files, or web sites add cookies and other files to your system. It can also be used to notify you that a shared file has been updated and the changes need to be reviewed.

Tech Tip: Find out if a web page is revealing an email address to spammers

Regular Expressions provide an easy way to scan a web page to find out if you have inadvertantly revealed an email address that spammers can use.
