In this newsletter:

Announcing:

Desaware's Licensing System Receives Visual Studio Magazine's Editor's Choice Award

We are pleased to announce that the Desaware Licensing System garnered a Visual Studio Magazine's Editor's Choice Award at the recent VSLive conference in San Francisco. By definition this award is given to a product that the editors of Visual Studio Magazine believe to "represent new or emerging categories of products that promise to improve the lives of developers significantly". Visual Studio Magazine (formally Visual Basic Programmer's Guide) has long been a leader in the technical magazines of our industry. We thank them for the award and wonderful comments about the Licensing System.

For a limited time, we are offering a special discount of 20% off on Desaware's Licensing System. To receive your discount, you must purchase directly from Desaware. Use code:DLSVSMECA on our online store or call (408) 377-4770. Offer expires 5/21/04.

As part of the Visual Studio Magazine Insight newsletter of April 6, 2004, Fawcette has also made available reviews of the Desaware Licensing System and CAS/Tester prepared by Don Kiely.

Dan's Latest Ebook: Exploring .NET Volume 2

Dan has released the latest volume in his Exploring .NET series. This ebook contains several articles including:

  • How Big is a Boolean - Migration from VB6 to VB .NET has subtle issues, sometimes even primitive data types aren't what they seem.

  • Speed Tests - Comparing performance of VB .NET and C# is sometimes like comparing apples and oranges - and sometimes it isn't.

  • Late Bound Events - Detecting events raised from dynamically loaded objects is easy - once you know how.

  • Hidden Treasures Part I and II - Just because VB .NET and C# can both access the full power of the .NET runtime doesn't mean you're limited to the .NET runtime. VB .NET has all sorts of extra goodies that can make your life easier.

As always these articles have been updated with the latest information and sample code. Exploring .NET volume 2 is available from our web site or Amazon.com for $7.49.

Product Review: CAS/Tester

We are always pleased to have a review of our products appear in magazines or newsletters. First, because it is always nice to read that developers find value in our products. And secondly, because when the products are reviewed, invariably there is a function that is highlighted by the reviewer because of it's importance, but we at Desaware have taken for granted. Case in point, Mike Gunderloy's review of CAS/Tester for ADT's (Application Development Trends) Developer Central, posted April 9, 2004.

New Article: Detect and Automatically Respond to User Input Requests from Running Applications

When running long operations in an application, you may prefer to run them unattended. But if the application encounters errors or unexpected results, it may display a message box or form requesting your input on how to proceed. This article explores how to detect and automatically respond to these requests. Read the article at  http://www.desaware.com/tech/detectnewwindow.aspx

We Need Your Input

We have been discussing several new ideas and we need our developer community's opinion as to whether these ideas will be helpful to you.

General VB Q & A

We are thinking of inviting our community to send general VB questions to us. Should we decide to do this, we would publish the answers in a separate newsletter. Knowing how much email everyone receives each day, we have decided that the Q&A newsletter would be published only once a month.

Small Group Online Technical Seminar

These seminars will be limited to no more than 7 people. The seminars would be on technical aspects of Desaware's products. For example, StateCoder, what are state machines and how best to utilize them in your programming. Seminars would be interactive and last approximately 30 minutes.

We would also appreciate suggestions from our developer community as to what topics you would like explored and what types of technical information you are looking for.

Please send all comments to marian@desaware.com.

Preorder Dan's new book - Always Use Protection: A Teen's Guide to Safe Computing

Most of Dan's books are for professionals, but recently his nephew and a friend were hit by a virus (and worse), and he came to realize that teens were suffering horribly from viruses, hackers and yes, even identity theft - yet he couldn't find a single book on computer security written for the unique needs of teenagers.

So he wrote it.  In his words...

"Home users are the most vulnerable right now, and teens often have the best machines in the house, and spend the most time on the Internet. As professionals, we have a responsibility to help our kids, friends and neighbors secure their systems. The best way to do this is to teach them to help themselves, and most teens are perfectly capable of handling this task.

This book is designed to empower teens (and other home users, for that matter) to protect their own computers and themselves from computer security risks. I believe this book can make a difference, and would like your help in this effort."

Dan will be traveling to different cities and towns promoting this book, he would love to meet you in person. Check out his scheduled appearances.

Visit www.AlwaysUseProtection.com for more details and to pre-order the book.

Free ebook offer! Safe Computing for the College Bound

As a supplement to his new book "Always Use Protection: A Teen's Guide to Safe Computing", Dan is offering a free ebook focusing on the computing needs of students heading off to college.

Wishing all of you success in your programming efforts.
